When a school crossing guard signals you to stop or proceed, what should you do?

When a school crossing guard is directing traffic, their instructions take precedence to protect children crossing the street. If the guard signals you to stop, come to a complete stop and wait. When they signal you to proceed, move forward carefully and watch for kids who may still be in or near the crosswalk. This rule applies even if you’re in a hurry or would normally have the right of way, because the guard’s job is to keep pedestrians safe in that area. Ignoring the signal or proceeding without clear permission from the guard puts children at risk and can lead to penalties.
